Dental fillings are a common type of dental treatment designed to restore damaged teeth and protect them from future problems. Dr. David Snyder of Lowcountry Dental Center in Bluffton, SC offers a choice of cosmetic bonded white restorations, known as white fillings, or traditional amalgam fillings, called silver fillings.
Don was concerned about discolored teeth. We started with an at-home teeth whitening kit to lighten the color of his natural teeth. His old fillings could not be lightened using the bleaching gel. Notice in the photo the areas of discoloration. When the teeth whitening treatment was complete, his old dark fillings were replaced with matching, brighter, whiter fillings for an undetectable treatment.

Types of Dental Fillings
Composite Dental Fillings
Composite dental fillings are made from a biocompatible composite resin which is applied directly to the tooth. Dr. Snyder typically uses resin dental fillings for patients with minor tooth decay or damage.
Resin fillings are very affordable and highly durable, however, they are not as long lasting as porcelain or gold fillings. Most patients will need to have a resin filling “touched up” in five years.
Porcelain Dental Fillings
Porcelain dental fillings are categorized as either dental inlays or dental onlays. These types of restorations can be used as a cavity filling or tooth filling for someone with more extensive damage.
Dr. Snyder is one of the few Bluffton dentists to be able to offer same day treatment for porcelain inlays and onlays. Using an advanced CAD/CAM technology called e4d, Dr. Snyder can design, fabricate and place a porcelain filling in just one office visit.
A dental inlay covers the interior contours of the tooth, while an onlay covers the entire biting surface. Porcelain dental fillings are permanent and virtually invisible. Dental porcelain is extremely durable and with proper care and maintenance, a porcelain dental filling can last for many years.
Amalgam Dental Fillings
Amalgam dental fillings have been used for over 150 years. They are extremely long lasting and very cost effective. Many patients today are choosing white filings instead of silver fillings because of concerns about mercury.
Though the FDA considers amalgam filings to be safe, many patients still avoid this type of restoration and are choosing to replace their old metal filling with newer white fillings. Dr. Snyder can replace your amalgam filling with a new cosmetic filling either made of dental composite or porcelain.
